Email Delivery Audit Trail

Registered Email™ service provides the most robust forensic audit trail of the technical interactions with servers and devices, which can be authenticated on demand as associated with the original message content and transmission timestamps.

How will the Registered Receipt™ email forensic audit trail provide the advantage in case of a dispute about who said what when by email?

In a legal dispute, Registered Email™ records, called Registered Receipt™ email, generally would be considered in the evidence discovery process of the dispute (the arguments between the parties to determine which evidence stands up to scrutiny and would be admissible for the proceedings). The Registered Email service puts the sender in a position of advantage, as the evidential weight of their Registered Receipt email is stronger than the evidential weight of standard email, prints of email or attachments, or records of what may have been claimed to have been sent and received, submitted by the other party. Registered Email records provide verifiable and irrefutable records of the entire email transmission (content and time sent and received).

The Registered Receipt™ record is a standalone record. All transaction metadata – data about the data transmission needed to reconstruct and authenticate the original message content, attachments, uniform government times of processing, sending, and receiving, Internet forensics with cryptographic codes to ensure authenticity of all of this data — are embedded encrypted in the receipt itself. The Registered Email service does not store any of this information and cannot by itself (without the Registered Receipt being returned to the Registered Email system) reconstruct the transmission. The Registered Email service provides a mechanism to authenticate the receipt and reconstruct the authenticated electronic original.

Registered Receipt: The Registered Receipt email that is automatically returned to the sender includes not only metadata relating to the email transaction, but also an encoded copy of the sender’s original message and all attachments as they were received by the recipient’s server. This Registered Receipt is secured by cryptographic technology of which RPost is the only key holder. The safeguards and methods employed by RPost meet court-accepted standards that allow for the decrypted and authenticated Registered Receipt email content and all attachments to be accepted in court as an authentic original.

PROTOCOL LEVEL TRANSMISSION METADATA

The baseline for legal delivery is “delivered to mail server” or “failure” of the recipient’s mail server to accept that email on behalf of that recipient. Like a courier, the Registered Email system documents the highest level of delivery possible within a period of time – – delivered to mail server (mail room), delivered to mailbox (recipient’s desktop), or opened (recipient).

Note: The Registered Email service further cryptographically associates the content with the delivery analysis, as well as uniform timestamps of sending and receiving, and then renders the entire “receipt” record resistant to tampering, verifiable, and able to reconstruct an authenticated original email body text, attachments, Internet forensics, official timestamps and delivery analysis.

Note: The safekeeping and recording of the original transmission “metadata” on the part of RPost is one of the keys to court authenticity and admissibility.

Registered Email™ technology is RPost patented.
