Deepfake


A deepfake is synthetic media, usually video, audio, or images, created or altered with AI so it appears real. It can imitate a person’s face, voice, or actions well enough to mislead viewers, damage trust, spread false information, or support fraud. 

For businesses, deepfakes are now a trust problem, not just a media problem. UK and US government guidance warns that generative AI and deepfake tools are making fake voice, video, and email content cheaper, easier, and more realistic, which raises the risk of impersonation, phishing, identity abuse, and financial fraud.


Most deepfakes start with source material: photos, voice clips, video, or public recordings. A machine learning model studies patterns in that material, then generates new media or alters existing media so the result matches the target person’s face, voice, or expressions. Generative AI has sped this up and lowered the skill needed to produce convincing fakes at large scale. 

In a scam, the fake media is usually only one layer. Attackers often pair it with stolen context, breached accounts, spoofed domains, urgent payment requests, or social pressure. That is why deepfakes fit so well into phishing, vishing, and business email compromise. 

Key Stages of the Deepfake Process

  • Gather source material such as public video clips, social posts, webinars, or voicemail. 
  • Train or tune a model, or use an off-the-shelf service, to copy a face or voice. 
  • Generate the fake video, audio, image, or live meeting feed. 
  • Refine realism with lip sync, lighting fixes, background noise, and scripting. 
  • Deliver it through email, chat, a phone call, a video meeting, or a fake onboarding flow. 

Current threat reporting points in one direction: deeper realism, lower cost, and broader use. The UK NCSC says deepfake and generative AI tools now let people create or modify text, images, voice, and video with minimal effort and low cost. Europol has warned about near-real-time impersonation, full-body deepfakes, and wider criminal use. NIST’s late-2025 AI cybersecurity profile also flags AI-enabled spear phishing that uses audio and video manipulation.


Deepfakes attack how decisions get made. They can fake executive approval, vendor identity, customer verification, interview candidates, or emergency instructions. One well-known case involved Arup, where fraudsters used a deepfake video call to trick an employee into sending about $25 million. The FBI and IC3 have also warned about voice and messaging impersonation campaigns and altered “proof-of-life” media in extortion scams. 

This matters even more in regulated environments, where trust in identity, consent, record integrity, and approved communications affects legal, financial, and operational risk. A deepfake can turn a normal workflow into a fraud channel fast.


Without specific controls, teams rely too much on human intuition: “that sounded like my boss” or “the face looked right on the call.” NIST’s digital identity guidance now recommends analyzing media for signs of generative AI, using passive detection, and adding device attestation because face, voice, or recorded media alone are no longer enough. 

Another gap is missing provenance. If an organization cannot check where content came from, whether it was edited, or whether a workflow required a second channel of approval, a convincing fake can slide through routine business processes. NIST guidance points to provenance data, metadata, digital watermarks, and audit trails as part of the answer, while also noting that no single watermarking method is foolproof. 


Good deepfake defense does not depend on one magic detector. It combines synthetic-content detection, provenance checks, liveness testing, device signals, identity proofing, workflow rules, and human verification. In practice, that means checking whether media shows AI artifacts, whether it carries trustworthy provenance data, and whether a risky action still requires out-of-band confirmation. 

For high-risk actions, such as changing bank details or approving a wire, the safer model is simple: never trust face, voice, or email alone. Require layered controls before money or sensitive data moves. 

Key Features to Look For

Look for tools and workflows that include:

  • Audio, image, and video analysis for detecting deepfakes 
  • Content provenance and metadata checks 
  • Liveness detection and device attestation 
  • Step-up verification for payment, payroll, and vendor changes 
  • Logging, alerts, and evidence trails for investigations 
  • Integration with email security, IAM, KYC, and incident response tools 

Deepfake defense works best when it fits existing systems instead of sitting off to the side. The highest-value integrations are usually secure email, identity proofing, conferencing, finance approvals, help desk workflows, and the SOC or SIEM. That turns deepfake risk from a “weird media issue” into something the business can actually monitor and control. 


A mature approach lowers fraud risk, improves evidence quality, and reduces the odds that one fake message or call causes a real-world loss. It also supports risk management expectations around information integrity, identity assurance, and content authenticity that appear across NIST guidance and matter in privacy, healthcare, legal, and contract-heavy workflows.


An organization should seriously look at this now if it handles wire transfers, remote approvals, vendor onboarding, identity checks, executive communications, or confidential deal work. It becomes more urgent when teams approve requests over video calls, voice notes, email, or messaging apps without a second verification channel.


A deepfake is not just fake media. It is a practical way to attack trust. As generative AI improves, deepfakes are becoming easier to create, harder to spot, and more useful in fraud, phishing, identity abuse, and executive impersonation. The smart response is layered: teach people what to question, verify risky requests out of band, add provenance and identity controls, and strengthen the communication systems that attackers like to abuse.
